Thanks to two generous grants from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund the church had been made waterproof and was looking at its best. The high prices being paid for scrap metal have created a demand for copper and lead and St Thomas', like many other buildings in the area, has suffered two considerable thefts of lead from the roof. Then on Friday the 21st December an arsonist set fire to the oil tank at the rear of the church. The resultant fireball entered the church building completely destroying the organ, the organ loft and damaging the main Chancel roof. Thanks to the outstanding dedication and care of the teams of firemen who entered the building at the height of the flames using breathing apparatus, quite a number of irreplaceable items were saved. Work to restore the building will commence in the New Year but of course this will take a great deal of time, effort and money to put everything right.
