This year's Great Northern AV Weekend will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 2nd, 3rd and 4th December at the usual venue - Wilmslow Guild Centre for Adult Education (about 4 miles from Manchester Airport - see www.avnews.org.uk for map and details.)

Friday 2nd December, 7.30pm - 'From Polar Bears to Penguins'

Lee & Bernadette Kitchingman. [Both AFIAP, CPAGB, BPE2*].

Lee and Bernadette enjoy visiting colder regions, either above the Scandinavian Arctic Circle or around Antarctica. Tonight, they will be in search of Polar Bears in Svalbard and King Penguins in South Georgia.

Wildlife photography is their passion. Lee specializes in video - he converted to high definition four years ago - while Bernadette specializes in digital still images. Both have had significant success with their images in national and international competitions.

Bring along your cold weather gear as they absorb you in close encounters with fascinating creatures from both Polar Regions. The evening will include a variety of wildlife, mingled with some interesting polar history.

As usual this evening will be open to the general public, so please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Saturday 3rd December, 10.00am - Great Northern Festival.

A National AV competition open to anybody resident in the British Isles and to overseas members of British AV Groups. There is a special prize for the best beginner's sequence, so this is an excellent opportunity to see both National/International standard AV and what can be achieved by relative newcomers, all in one competition. Finishing time will depend on the number of entries.

The Chairman of the Jury for this year's Festival is: Martin Fry FRPS APAGB

Martin is a Primary Headteacher near Stroud in Gloucestershire and the present chairman of Cheltenham Camera Club with some 150 members. He has been making AVs for over 25years, starting with the manual duo-fade. He was inspired through watching Sir George & Lady Doreen Pollock and the Midland trio of Keith Brown, Clive Atkins and Richard Brown. Martin won the Great Northern last year and has won the Midland Counties AV competition a record 7 times. He has gained numerous international awards as well as runner up at both the National and International on two occasions each.
He gained his Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society using 4 projectors. Martin lectures in this art form, having visited over 250 different clubs across Britain. He is also a well known National judge in all areas of photography and has sat on the RPS distinction panel. A great deal of Martin's photography portrays the beauty of his native Gloucestershire and the Cornish peninsula; Martin's images have supported the music of Gloucestershire singer/songwriter Johnny Coppin on numerous occasions including his annual Christmas concerts for the last 10 years.

The other jury members are: Henk Tulp.

Henk lives in the Netherlands and has been working as a professional photographer for many years. He has deliberately chosen not to make AVs professionally, because he wants to be free in what he creates and not be restrained by the ideas of clients. More recently his work has shifted to giving lectures and workshops. He is an Mobjects directAV software dealer.

Two AV friends, Ron Davies and Peter Coles, inspired him to increase the quality of his AV work which led to winning several awards. He considers 'The Bridge is Safe' (in conjunction with Albert Slack), to be one of the best things he's made so far. It won the Great Northern in 2004 and is still running in the Netherlands National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek.

When he judges photography and/or AV he always tries to find the authors signature in their work. He's interested in the connotation of the work and whether it communicates with its audience, rather than the actual pictures he's seeing.

And Jill K. Bunting CPAGB

Jill, along with John Smith is Editor of the RPS AV News Magazine. She is currently President of the North Wales Photographic Association (NWPA), a member and committee member of both Rhyl Photographic Society and Abergele Camera Club. Along with other members she has helped form an AV Group at Abergele. She is a member of Wilmslow Guild AV Group and also The North Wales and Wirral AV Group.

Jill has been involved with AV for almost 25 years, for the first five years attending many events around the country as a spectator, learning from the sequences she saw and picking up useful hints and tips on AV production.

She then managed to purchase a second hand tape recorder, microphone and lenses from Sir George Pollock. Along with a second hand Royale projector she began making her own sequences, quickly picking up awards, both locally and Internationally. Her most recent success has been with 'The Colour Thief', winning a Silver Medal in the Adelaide AV Fest in 2009 and a Gold Medal in the South African MFFC Salon in 2011.

Jill was the first to gain the CPAGB in AV when the PAGB began their awards in 1995. She gives talks and demonstrations to camera clubs and Groups on AV production and PicturesToExe, always keen to interest others in the art form of AV. Her sequences have always been imaginative, she looks for good dissolves and images that 'dance' and flow with the soundtrack.

Sunday 4th December, 10.00am - RPS NW AV Day.

Attenders' Sequences with comments from our guest speakers and members of the audience is an invaluable way to obtain advice and for everyone to learn how their work might be improved. Sequences which have been entered in Saturday's competition will not be shown again on Sunday. Attendees are encouraged to show work for comment first, then they have the opportunity to make improvements before entering competitions. Sequences will be shown on a 'first come, first served' basis, so please book in advance.

As usual our guest speakers will be the three judges from Saturday who will be discussing and demonstrating various AV techniques using some of their sequences as illustrations. If past years are anything to go by, all kinds of useful information will be included.

Tea, coffee etc are included throughout Saturday and Sunday. An extensive buffet lunch is available if pre-booked, or you can bring your own sandwiches. We try to make the event as friendly as possible by providing name badges and including time for socialising and browsing.

The usual information and bring and buy second hand equipment stands will be present (please put your name on items for sale!) You will be welcome on any day, or for the whole weekend.

Information packs will be sent in the Autumn to previous attendees and anyone else whom we think might be interested. If you don't receive yours, if you wish to be added to our mailing list, (or be deleted from our mailing list!) or need any other information, just ask Suzanne or Howard (Friday & Saturday) or Bill (Sunday.)

Details of the weekend, other AV related activities and the WGAVG programme can be found on our website www.wilmslowguildav.org.uk also on www.avnews.org.uk.
